Happy New Year! We've nearly finished counting down our favourite albums of the past year, but we just couldn't forget about R&B. 2023 was a great year to be an R&B fan, with standout albums from established artists and newcomers alike. These were a few of our favourites...
6LACK – "Since I Have A Lover"
After nearly five years out of the spotlight, 6LACK has returned with his third studio album, Since I Have A Lover. This body of work is lined with incredible depth and range, housing a collection of songs that delve into mental health, healing, personal growth, love and his own journey of finding his way—the good and the bad. The album features stunning collaborations with Don Toliver, Wale, India Shawn, Ty Dolla $ign, QUIN, and production by Leon Thomas, OZ, Fwdslxsh, Scribz Riley, EarthGang’s Olu, Teddy Walton and others. In his own words, Since I Have A Lover "is a collection of songs about love, and learning through the pains that come with growth. It’s a reminder that regardless of the outcome, choosing to better yourself, and sharing that experience with the people around you, has a lasting effect."
Jordan Ward – "FOREWARD"
Hit play on FOREWARD and you'll be met with some of the most refreshing production and interesting songwriting of 2023. It's clear to see why this young artist has picked up co-signs from legends like Tyler, The Creator and SZA—he's in a lane of his own. With influences ranging from old-school funk, alternative rock, hip-hop, and more, Jordan Ward distills his eclectic taste into a truly singular body of work on FOREWARD. Our favourite songs are ever-changing but some standout tracks include "WHITE CROCS (with Ryan Trey)," "FAMJAM4000" and "IDC (with Joony)."
Amaarae – "Fountain Baby"
Songwriter, singer, producer and engineer, Amaarae is shifting the frequency of the club and pushing forward culture one song at a time. Daniel Caesar – "Never Enough"
Daniel Caesar's long-awaited third studio album Never Enough made us realize that great music is worth waiting for. Never Enough is filled to the brim with songs that feel timeless and push the envelope all at once. The album features instant classics like "Always," "Do You Like Me" and "Toronto 2014." Never Enough was executive produced by Dylan Wiggins and also includes collaborations with Ty Dolla $ign, Omar Apollo, serpentwithfeet, and Mustafa.
